Finish this sentence ... 🤔

. . . and get some rest.

“My strength returns to me with a cup of coffee and the Psalms.”

Dorothy Day

Finish this sentence: “I’ll sleep when I’m ______ 💀”. In today’s email we’ll try to help you get rest before you’re ☠. Whether it comes from coffee and scripture, sleep or self-care, something’s gotta give in our productivity-is-life kind of life. 🏃‍♀️

And so, all things rest, sleep, true leisure for today. I hope this email helps you get some rest:

  • And the last shall be first: Bedroom makeovers

  • Routines: Make nighttime the right time.

  • Leisure: It’s not laying around, but working for the rest.

  • Pajama Sets: Matching just.for.you.

BEDROOM: Does your kid’s rooms have a styled gallery wall, matching bedding, and coordinating paint colors? Yes? Now, how about your bedroom? 🤐 Let’s go from the dumping ground of everyone’s stuff to a haven of rest. Bonus: it’s a way to prioritize your marriage.

First thing — purge like your life depends on it. Next, make a plan. Lastly, make a mood board on Pinterest or google slides to visualize your style. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Sleeping Beauty: Invest in linens and cover that boxspring with a fitted sheet or bed skirt. Ditch the endless throw pillows and find a recipe for bed-making that appeals to your style. Purchase a nightstand that coordinates with your bed for the ultimate power couple.

Set the Mood: Lighting is everything. Two to three sources of light per room are the rules, so aim for bedside lamps or sconces. Don’t want to rewire but found the cutest sconces? Here’s a great idea.💡Oh, and don’t forget the non-toxic candles! (Use code MRS6AM for your purchase).

Make it your own: Anchor with a well-placed rug, and throw the inevitable junk into a nice straw bag. Hang the pictures and do it easily with this picture-hanging rule. Don’t forget some fresh or faux greenery and flowers.

NIGHT ROUTINE: Morning you will thank evening you — if you get a restorative routine going. Experts say to set a bedtime and work backward. As you wash away your makeup and all the daily grunge, examen your day. This will start your wind-down with peace. If you need more time, double cleanse it. Moisturize, brush your teeth, and don’t forget to give your brain a boost with flossing. Now it’s time to dress for success (see below) and stretch yourself into bed. Opt for lower temperatures before you buckle down for bedtime story sans screens. Our top summer re-reads? Pick your adventure with a spiritual read, a classic, or a comical childhood account.

LEISURE: Ever head into a Saturday or Sunday hoping for restorative rest or play, but it doesn’t happen? It feels elusive. You want to relax and lay around, but it makes you feel antsy? Turns out leisure is not the absence of work, but is something you actually have to work for.

As William Henry Davies writes in his poem “Leisure”, activities allow us time to “stop and stare.” But what does that mean for us? We must intentionally create our antidote to anxiety. Where to start? Make a list of the activities that breathe life and rest into your soul. Early morning hikes, warm coffee and watching the bird feeder, plinking away at the piano, card games with your kids, a trip to the symphony, a slow bake, a poetry reading to your loved one, an evening bonfire. Then make these things a priority in your leisure day.

PAJAMAS: Why should your kids have all the fun? Matching PJs aren’t just for Junior . . . or your Christmas card. Get yourself something to look forward to. Go for ethically made linen, pretty in pink, or take a nap on the wild side. Go grown-up or floral in a gown. Heck, go Grandma! 👵 Just go and retire the old stained shirt . . . your husband will thank you.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately: “Most of the time you don’t need more information, you need more courage.” (h/t author James Clear)
