Let's Switch It Up 💡

Plus: Drape Dreams, Duggar Fashion, & Goonie Wannabes

Why Cheez-Its though? There is now a Cheez-It filling station in Joshua Tree National Park. Not water, not Coke, not electrolytes for hikers, but Cheez-Its. 🤔 Oh, wait, I get it. It’s the munchies …

Good Morning! In today’s e-mail:

  • Home: Beauty and the Pleat. 🤏🏽

  • Fashion: Take your denim to the max

  • Career: U-turn Tactics 🚫

  • Health: A coffee breakup date

  • Trends: What’s better than Y2K fashion? 👩🏼‍🦳

DESIGN: Pinch me. I must be dreaming, because these pleats are heavenly.

You may have never heard of pinch pleats. But after you see them, you will never unsee them. They’re gorgeous, timeless, and elevate any room and any style. But … they’re also as expensive as a private island. Rest assured! Just snag an affordable drape and make your own. Speaking from experience . . . it can be done! All you need are few tutorials. Oh, and pleating tape and hooks for those crisp pleats. Here’s a good Ikea hack. And a no-sew DIY tutorial with a Greek twist.

But, more importantly, can you hang?

COFFEE: It’s a little sexist. Coffee affects men differently than women. Men can handle 400 mg of caffeine per day, and it increases their testosterone when consumed on an empty stomach. Not so in women. In her book, Dr. Sara Gottfried cites studies on how coffee decreases testosterone and increases cortisol, estrogen, and blood sugar in women. She, along with others in the science community, have been preaching the negative hormonal effects of coffee on women. Some even recommend cutting it altogether. 😵

So, what now? If you aren’t on the abstain train, there’s still a way to mitigate the effects of caffeine. Pop collagen, full fat milk, coconut milk, or butter into your coffee in the AM. Eat it after a breakfast of protein and healthy fats. Or attempt to keep your caffeine intake to less than 200 mg a day. Is “Mama needs coffee healthy hormones” the new kitschy mug?

SKIRTS: You’re not a Duggar or a homesteader — no matter. The 90s are coming back hard, so it’s time for a denim maxi skirt. And we aren’t just seeing blue— they’re also in black and white. For my shorter ladies, high waisted maxis make you appear taller and accentuate the waist. But how to style… 🤔

Pair with a bodysuit and western belt for a clean silhouette. The Canadian Tux has never let us down; just make sure your top has a contrasting denim wash. Homeschooling never looked this good: pair with an edgy graphic tee and trainers. Or fully embrace the 90s with a cream vest. Still on the fence? Think of it as an investment piece: Tall boots, colored tights, and/or a blazer can transition your skirt to your new fall fav.

CAREER: It’s like flipping a switch, right? Changing jobs is that easy — well, maybe not. But if you are considering changing jobs, starting a side hustle, leaving the workforce, or switching careers, we can give you some advice: try to isolate why you want to switch and determine whether you can fix that at your current place. Don’t make a move out of desperation but do move before they force you out. Are you unhappy for other reasons in your life? Find peace before you decide. Remember, people change jobs (and careers) all the time — even in midlife — and are fine. Don’t live by fear, but be prudent.

Going in a totally different direction, it can be done.

“Go to bed early / wake up early. Go for long walks or hikes. Drink water and black coffee. Do squats, bench presses, and deadlifts. Visit friends and family for no particular reason. Turn off your socials. Eat the same whole foods every day. Sit in a quiet church . . . Be boring and you’re life will improve.” - Mr6am
